Human Ashes

  • Sri Lankan nationals wishing to import into Sri Lanka cremated remains (ashes) of Sri Lankan nationals/expatriates passed away in Brazil or other countries in South America must follow the procedure mentioned below.
  • Letter of request from the next-of-kinrequesting the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brasilia to coordinate the process of transporting the cremated human remains (ashes) to Sri Lanka in consultation with pertinent local and Sri Lankan authorities.
  • Duly affirmed affidavit by the next-of-kingiving consent to an authorized legal person to undertake the responsibility of taking the cremated remains (ashes) to Sri Lanka and placing the ashes in an authorized cemetery or premises.
  • Letter of acceptance from the cemetery in which the cremated remains (ashes) to be laid.
  • Documents pertaining to the authority given by the respective carrier/airlines on which the remains would be transported and Customs and Immigration authorities at respective airports for the transportation of the ashes.
  • Original death certificate of the deceased issued by the local authority.
  • Original cremation certificate issued by the Hospital/Medical Officer or the competent local authority.
  • Original Sri Lankan passport of the deceased person whose cremated human remains (ashes) are to be transported to Sri Lanka.
  • Original passport of the authorized legal person who is carrying the ashes.
  • Flight details indicating the carrier, date and time of arrival of the ashes in Sri Lanka.
  • The local death certificate, Cremation Certificate and other pertinent documents issued by the local authorities should be duly authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country in which the document have been issued.
