Non-Machine Readable Passports (NMRP) in lieu of expired, damaged, loss or stolen passports

  • The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brasília, Brazil with the approval of the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka may issue Non-Machine Readable Passports (NMRP) to Sri Lankan nationals living or traveling in Brazil or other countries in South America enabling them to return to Sri Lanka in case of an emergency in the following circumstances;
    • Current passport is expired or damaged, and no inadequate time to obtain a new passport
    • Current passport is lost or stolen
    • A new passport is awaiting from the Department of Immigration & Emigration of Sri Lanka
  • Documents required for a NMRP
    • Letter of request by the applicant
    • Duly filled passport application form
    • Form D (If passport is lost)
    • Original passport
    • Original Birth Certificate
    • National Identification Card or Sri Lankan Driving Licence
    • Police report (If passport is lost)
    • Valid visa card/endorsement or permanent resident card
    • Certification of Citizenship statues
    • Three (3) Photographs
    • Travel itinerary/air tickets
    • Prescribed fee for the NMRP

Instructions

  • The Non-Machine Readable Passports (NMRP) issued only on an emergency requirement of the applicant is a one-way travel document which can only be used to return to Sri Lanka.
  • The validity of a Non-Machine Readable Passport (NMRP) is valid only for 6 months. However, under exceptional circumstances, issuing the Emergency Travel Document/NMRP valid for over 6 months may be considered, provided an application for new regular passport is made subsequently by the applicant.
  • Circumstances under which an emergency travel document is required must be explained by the applicant in a written communication addressed to the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka.
  • In case the current passport is expired or damaged, the original expired/damaged passport must be submitted. If the current passport is lost or stolen, a clear copy of passport must be submitted.
  • It is required to submit along with the NMRP application the original or copy of the Sri Lankan National Identification Card (NIC) or the Sri Lankan Driving Licence (DL).
  • Original Police Report issued by a local police station in which a complaint was lodged in relation to the loss or stolen Sri Lankan passport along with its English translation must be submitted.
  • If the applicant is a permanent resident in Brazil or other countries of South America a valid permanent resident card must be produced to prove the current visa status in the country of residence of the applicant.
  • If the applicant is a temporary visitor to the country in which the current passport was lost or stolen while traveling, a copy of the valid visa endorsement to the country concerned must be furnished.
  • If the applicant is unable to produce the permanent residence card or the endorsement related to his or her visa to the country of residence, a document issued by the competent authority of the country concerned confirming that the applicant has not acquired the citizenship of the country of residence must be submitted.
  • The photographs must in colour with light blue or white background with the size of 3.5cm x 4.5cm.
