Concurrent Accreditation

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brasília, Brazil is currently accredited to the Federative Republic of Brazil and concurrently accredited to the following counties in the South American region.

  • Bolivia (Plurinational State of Bolivia) – concurrence awaited
  • Chile (Republic of Chile)
  • Colombia (Republic of Colombia)
  • Guyana (Co-operative Republic of Guyana)
  • Paraguay (Republic of Paraguay)
  • Peru (Republic of Peru)
  • Suriname (Republic of Suriname)
  • Uruguay (Oriental Republic of Uruguay

Diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Argentina were established in 1962. The Embassy of the Argentina Republic in New Delhi is concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brasilia is concurrently accredited to Argentina.

As members of G15 and the G77, Sri Lanka and Argentina share common views on various international matters and cooperate with each other at multilateral fora,  including the United Nations.

Ambassador Musthafa Mohamed Jaffeer submitted his open copies of credentials to His Excellency Jorge Faurie, Foreign Minister of Argentina on March 13th 2019 thus effectively accrediting him to Buenos Aires.

Bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Colombia which were established in 1988 have been cordial and friendly. Sri Lanka and Colombia have cooperated and supported each other at various multilateral fora including the United Nations, UNESCO, ECOSOC, IOC, UNHRC, ICAO etc.

Ambassador Musthafa Mohamed  Jaffeer presented his credentials to the President of Colombia Iván Duque Márquez on 12th September 2019, at the Palacio de Nariño in Bogotá, Colombia, concurrently accrediting the former as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Colombia with resident in Brasília, Brazil.

Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Suriname on 16th November 2012. The Government of Suriname has concurrently accredited its Ambassador in New Delhi to Sri Lanka and the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Brazil is concurrently accredited to the Government of Suriname.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Brazil, Mr. Musthafa Mohamed Jaffeer presented credentials to the President of the Republic of Suriname, His Excellency Desiré Delano Bouterse, accrediting the former as Sri Lanka’s envoy to the Republic of Suriname with resident in Brasília, Brazil at the Presidential Palace in Paramaribo, Suriname at a solemn ceremony held on 12 December 2018.

Sri Lanka and Paraguay established diplomatic relations on 03rd April 2009. The Ambassador of the Embassy of Paraguay in New Delhi, India is accredited to Sri Lanka on a non-residential basis and the Ambassador of Sri Lanka from Brazil is concurrently accredited to the Republic of Paraguay.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to, Musthafa Mohamed Jaffeer presented his credentials to His Excellency Mario Abdo Benitez, the President of the Republic of Paraguay, on 23rd April 2019 at the López Palace, in Asunción, the Republic of Paraguay as the first Ambassador of Sri Lanka to present credentials to Paraguay with the view to brings further diplomatic, trade, economic and cultural interactions between the two countries.

Ambassador M.M. Sri Lanka and Uruguay established formal diplomatic relations on 21st July 1999. The two countries have cooperated with each other at multilateral fora including the United Nations on matters of mutual interest.

H.E. Musthafa Mohamed Jaffeer, former Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Brazil attended the Inauguration Ceremony of President-elect of Uruguay, Mr. Luis Lacalle Pou which was held on 01st March 2020 in Montevideo.

From the bilateral front, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Political Consultations between the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay is under negotiation.

The non-resident Ambassador of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay in New Delhi, India is concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka while the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Brazil to the Concurrently accredited to Uruguay.

The diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Chile were established in 1962. Chile established a Consulate in 1928 in Colonial Ceylon and the world renowned Chilean Poet Pablo Neruda once served as the Chilean Consul in Colombo but the Consulate was subsequently closed. The Embassy of the Chile in New Delhi is concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brasilia is concurrently accredited to Chile.

As members in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Sri Lanka and Chile share some common position and the two countries have cooperated at multilateral fora on common matters.

Currently, the Government of Sri Lanka is in the process of seeking Observer Status of the Pacific Alliance (PA) which is a four-country trade bloc comprising Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru in order to strengthen Sri Lanka´s trade relations with the region.

Sri Lanka and Peru established formal diplomatic relations on 17th March 1975. The two countries have cooperated with each other at multilateral fora including the United Nations on matters of mutual interest.

The non-resident Ambassador of Peru in New Delhi, India is concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka while the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Brazil in Brasilia is concurrently accredited to the Republic of Peru.

The Diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Bolivia were established as far back as 1963. The two countries have collaborated and continued to cooperate at multilateral fora, particularly as members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G-77.

The non-resident Ambassador of Bolivia in New Delhi, India is concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka. The concurrence for the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Brazil to be appointed as the non-resident Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Bolivia is awaited.

Sri Lanka and Guyana established formal diplomatic relations on 14th July 1974. Since then the two countries have cooperated with each other at multilateral fora including the United Nations on matters of mutual interest.

The non-resident Ambassador of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana in New Delhi, India is concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka while concurrence for the concurrent accreditation of the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Brazil to the Government of Guyana is pending.
